All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, or so the saying goes. It is necessary to work, and in this day and age – harder than ever, however without some ‘me-time’ people just can’t function to their optimum level. Hobbies offer people the chance to take a step back from their job and the more draining practicalities of everyday life, and engage in something they are passionate about, learn a skill and often to create something – all essential in being human and human happiness.
Often hobbies cost money, so how do you prepare or budget for the financial costs of your passion, whether it be pottery, football, or making model airplanes.
Expensive Hobbies
Your hobby is your passion, though how much you spend on it is down to how much you have for discretionary expenditure. It can be very hard to give a hard and fast percentage as many people will find that they have more money than others and a percentage of that would be disparate.
However, if you do find yourself struggling to pay for your passion, perhaps you should have a look at your budget. Many of us have a large amount of unnecessary expenditure each month. We spend money on things we don’t actually need , or want. A little bit of a read through a statement can see you come up with a number of items you don’t actually need. Magazine subscriptions that aren’t read, gym memberships that aren’t used – we all have some wastage. Cut these out and use the money you save to fund your hobby.
Look at Different Companies
Another way to engage in your hobby in a less expensive manner is to look at the companies who offer the equipment for it. Many of us have engaged in our hobby for years and have always purchased the materials we need from the same company. However, a little search around online can often herald new companies that offer the same services or materials for a far lower cost. The likes of Amazon may stock exactly what you require and do so at a far lower price. This can mean you’ll have no problem with the upkeep your love.
You may also look into using cheaper materials, or ones that are a notch below the ones you do currently. Though this is not often ideal it is a lot better than having to give up a hobby completely.
New Hobbies
If you can’t afford to continue a hobby, perhaps look for a new hobby. There’s always something else to take people’s eye and it is nice to try new things. Learning new skills and growing as a person is a central part to human happiness. If you have to end a hobby, to replace it with a new one try and remain positive and see it as a challenge and something new to try. After all things can change very suddenly and it is often the case you will be able to afford the original hobby again, while also having a new one.
Giving up a hobby is never nice, however, it is always best to replace it with a new one – you have to remain active to remain sane and a healthy hobby is a key part of this.
